Untraditional Holiday Decorations

With Christmas around the corner it’s time to deck the halls with bows of holly, or not. Green and red are traditional holiday colors and it seems that every year you keep bringing out the same old green garland and large red bows. If you’re looking to switch things up, or go with a less traditional approach then these tips are for you.

Just because green and red are labeled “Christmas colors” doesn’t mean they have to be used. Blues and whites can also be related to the holidays with the fluffy white snow and sometimes blue hued ice. Gold is great when you’re trying to achieve a more regal essence. Not only can you switch up the colors but you can also change the garland. Instead of the traditional fir a light green juniper garland will add a nice twist to your Christmas decorations.

Other colors that have been used for decorations are soft yellows and neutral tans and browns with low key reds; silvers, and pastels. To match the colors you can always use pinecones, berries, and sometimes flowers. In the picture paper white flowers were used as an accent.

In this picture the white and gold accents offset the pale blue walls. Using the juniper garland sparingly allows for eye catching accents around mirrors, paintings or photos, and shelves.
